How to Grow Coffee Arabica Seeds

Posted by TJ Hopkins on Apr 4th 2026

Growing Coffee Arabica trees from seed can be a rewarding project for gardeners. The plant produces the beans used to make coffee and also makes a beautiful houseplant with glossy green leaves. With patience and the right conditions, you can grow your own coffee plant from seed.

1. Start with Fresh Coffee Seeds

Coffee seeds germinate best when they are fresh and unroasted. Seeds that are dried or roasted will not grow.

Tips for best germination:

  • Use freshly harvested or properly stored seeds
  • Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before planting
  • Discard any seeds that float (they may be non-viable)

2. Prepare the Soil

Coffee plants prefer light, well-draining soil with organic matter.

Good soil mix:

  • 50% peat moss or coco coir
  • 25% compost
  • 25% perlite or sand

The soil should be slightly acidic (pH 6–6.5).

3. Plant the Seeds

Plant seeds shallowly since they need warmth and moisture to sprout.

Steps:

  1. Fill small pots or seed trays with the soil mix.
  2. Plant each seed about ½ inch (1–1.5 cm) deep.
  3. Place the flat side of the seed downward if visible.
  4. Lightly cover with soil and water gently.

Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

4. Provide Warmth and Humidity

Coffee seeds germinate best in warm, humid environments.

Ideal conditions:

  • Temperature: 70–85°F (21–29°C)
  • Bright indirect sunlight
  • High humidity

A humidity dome or plastic cover can help maintain moisture.

Germination usually takes 4–8 weeks, but sometimes longer.

5. Seedling Care

Once the seedlings emerge:

  • Move them to bright indirect light
  • Keep soil consistently moist
  • Avoid direct harsh sunlight while young

Coffee seedlings develop two large seed leaves first before true leaves appear.

6. Transplanting

When seedlings reach 4–6 inches tall, transplant them into larger containers.

Use a pot with:

  • Good drainage
  • Rich, slightly acidic soil
  • Organic matter such as compost

Coffee plants grow slowly but steadily.

7. Ongoing Care

Coffee plants thrive with consistent care.

Watering

  • Keep soil slightly moist but never soggy

Light

  • Bright indirect sunlight

Temperature

  • Ideal range 65–80°F (18–27°C)

Fertilizer

  • Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season

8. Growing Coffee Indoors

In cooler climates like northern areas of the United States, coffee plants are often grown indoors or in greenhouses.

Tips:

  • Place near a bright window
  • Use a humidifier or mist occasionally
  • Rotate the plant for even growth

9. When Coffee Plants Produce Beans

Coffee trees grown from seed may begin producing cherries in 3–5 years under good conditions.

Each cherry typically contains two coffee beans, which can be harvested, processed, roasted, and brewed.

Fun fact: Coffee Arabica plants can grow 6–15 feet tall, but when grown indoors they are usually kept 3–6 feet tall with pruning.
