How to Grow Virginia Tobacco Plant Seeds

Growing Virginia tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) from seed is fairly easy, but the seeds are extremely tiny and need special care to germinate. Here is a simple step-by-step guide.

1. Start Seeds Indoors

Virginia tobacco seeds should be started 6–8 weeks before the last frost in your area.

Steps:

  1. Fill seed trays or small pots with light seed-starting mix.
  2. Sprinkle the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil.
  3. Do not bury them — tobacco seeds need light to germinate.
  4. Mist lightly with water.

Tip: Mix seeds with a little sand to spread them evenly.

2. Provide Warmth and Light

Tobacco seeds germinate best in warm conditions.

  • Temperature: 70–80°F (21–27°C)
  • Light: Bright light or grow lights
  • Germination time: 7–14 days

Keep the soil moist but not soaked.

3. Thin the Seedlings

Once seedlings grow a few inches tall:

  • Thin them so they are 1–2 inches apart.
  • Remove weaker seedlings so stronger plants can grow.

This prevents overcrowding.

4. Transplant Outdoors

When seedlings reach 4–6 inches tall and frost danger has passed, move them outside.

Plant them in:

  • Full sun
  • Well-drained soil
  • 18–24 inches apart

Water immediately after transplanting.

5. Care for Tobacco Plants

Virginia tobacco plants grow quickly and need regular care.

Water

  • Keep soil evenly moist.

Fertilizer

  • Use a balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.

Topping

  • Remove flower buds to encourage larger leaves.
