Dragon Tree Seeds (Dracaena draco) produce one of the world's most distinctive ornamental trees. Native to the Canary Islands, this ancient evergreen is prized for its thick trunk, dramatic umbrella-shaped canopy, and attractive blue-green sword-like leaves. Mature trees become impressive architectural specimens and are famous for producing a deep red resin known as "Dragon's Blood." Dragon Trees are exceptionally drought tolerant once established and make outstanding landscape trees in warm climates or striking container plants in cooler regions.

Dragon Tree seeds have an estimated germination rate of 60–80% under proper growing conditions. No pre-treatment is required. Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, keep the soil warm and lightly moist, and use a humidity dome to help maintain consistent moisture during germination.

Germination Instructions

Dragon Tree seeds require no pre-treatment before sowing. Plant seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix and keep the growing medium consistently moist but never saturated. Maintain temperatures between 70–85°F (21–29°C) for best germination. Using a humidity dome helps retain moisture and encourages more consistent sprouting. Place containers in a bright location with indirect light until seedlings emerge.

Growing Information

Dragon Trees grow best in full sun but tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. They prefer sharply drained soils and should not be allowed to sit in standing water. Once established, these trees require very little supplemental watering and thrive in dry conditions. Their slow growth eventually produces a thick trunk and broad branching canopy, making them one of the most recognizable ornamental trees in the world. In colder climates, Dragon Trees are easily grown in containers and brought indoors during freezing weather.
