European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a hardy, long-lived deciduous tree prized for its dense canopy, attractive fluted gray bark, and brilliant yellow fall foliage. Native to Europe and western Asia, this adaptable tree is commonly used as a shade tree, windbreak, privacy screen, and formal hedge due to its ability to tolerate heavy pruning. European Hornbeam thrives in a wide range of growing conditions and develops into a strong, elegant specimen that adds year-round beauty to landscapes, parks, and large gardens.

Germination Instructions

European Hornbeam seeds require both warm and cold moist stratification to overcome dormancy.

  1. Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 24 hours before stratification.
  2. Warm stratify the seeds for 30 days in a moist medium.
  3. Follow with 90-120 days of cold moist stratification at approximately 34-41°F (1-5°C).
  4. After stratification, sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a quality seed-starting mix.
  5. Keep the soil evenly moist and place containers in a warm, bright location. A humidity dome may help maintain consistent moisture during germination.
  6. Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have developed several sets of true leaves and all danger of severe frost has passed.
