Germination Instructions

Purple Prickly Pear cactus seeds have a naturally tough outer seed coat. To help water enter the seed and improve germination, gently scarify each seed by lightly rubbing a small area with fine sandpaper or carefully nicking the outer coating. Avoid damaging the inner seed.

Soak the scarified seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours. Fill small pots or seed-starting trays with a well-draining cactus and succulent growing mix. Sow the seeds approximately 1/8 inch deep and lightly cover them with fine soil or sand.

Moisten the growing medium without making it soggy. Cover the container with a clear humidity dome to help maintain warmth and moisture. Place the seeds in a bright location with indirect light and maintain temperatures between 70–85°F.

Keep the growing medium lightly moist during germination. Germination may occur in approximately 2–12 weeks, although some seeds may take longer. Once seedlings appear, gradually increase airflow and remove the humidity dome. Provide bright light and allow the soil surface to begin drying between waterings.
