Grow one of the world's most revered and historic trees with Sacred Fig Tree Seeds (Ficus religiosa). Also known as the Bodhi Tree or Peepal Tree, this magnificent species is famous as the tree beneath which Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. Native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, the Sacred Fig is admired for its graceful, heart-shaped leaves with long tapering tips that shimmer beautifully in even the lightest breeze.

A fast-growing tree in warm climates, the Sacred Fig develops into a majestic specimen with a broad, spreading canopy that provides welcome shade for decades. It is an outstanding choice for tropical and subtropical landscapes, botanical gardens, meditation gardens, and bonsai enthusiasts. In cooler regions, it can be successfully grown in large containers and overwintered indoors or in a greenhouse.

Growing Instructions

Because Sacred Fig seeds are extremely small, sow them on the surface of a moist, sterile seed-starting mix and gently press them into the growing medium without covering them, as they require light to germinate. Place the container beneath a humidity dome and maintain temperatures between 75–85°F (24–29°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but never saturated. Germination typically occurs within 2–8 weeks depending on growing conditions.

Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them carefully into individual pots filled with a well-drained potting mix. Young plants appreciate bright light, regular watering, and protection from frost. In suitable climates, they can be transplanted outdoors once well established.
