Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa) is a beautiful ornamental shade tree known for its distinctive silvery leaf undersides, fragrant summer flowers, and attractive pyramidal shape. Native to southeastern Europe, this hardy tree is widely planted along streets, parks, and landscapes for its excellent shade and tolerance to urban conditions.

Mature trees can reach 50 to 70 feet tall with a broad, dense canopy that provides exceptional shade during the summer months. The foliage displays rich green upper surfaces with striking silver undersides that shimmer in the wind, creating an eye-catching effect throughout the growing season.

In early to mid-summer, Silver Linden produces clusters of fragrant yellow-white flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. The tree adapts well to a variety of soil conditions and is valued for its resistance to drought, heat, and urban pollution.

Growing Instructions

Carefully remove or scarify the outer pericarp surrounding the seed. After scarification, place the seeds in a moist growing medium and refrigerate for approximately 90 days to provide the necessary cold moist stratification period.

After stratification, sow the seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep in a quality seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and place containers in a warm location with bright indirect light. Using a humidity dome can help maintain moisture during germination.

Seedlings can be transplanted outdoors once they are well established and all danger of frost has passed.
