Weeping Lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula) is a fast-growing, warm-season perennial grass valued for its graceful, fountain-like growth and exceptional ability to stabilize soil. Native to southern Africa and widely used in the United States for erosion control, this hardy grass establishes quickly and thrives in dry, sandy, or nutrient-poor soils where many other grasses struggle.

The plant forms dense clumps with long, narrow leaves that arch downward in a “weeping” shape, creating an attractive ornamental effect while also forming a strong root system that anchors soil and reduces erosion. Because of its rapid establishment and drought tolerance, Weeping Lovegrass is commonly used along roadsides, slopes, reclaimed land, and conservation plantings.

Once established, Eragrostis curvula requires minimal maintenance and tolerates heat, drought, and poor soils. It also provides wildlife cover and can be used in pasture systems when properly managed.

Planting Information

Weeping Lovegrass seeds germinate best in warm soil and should be planted in late spring or early summer after the danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds lightly on the soil surface or cover with a very thin layer of soil, as the small seeds require good soil contact but minimal burial for successful germination.

With its rapid establishment, strong erosion control benefits, and elegant weeping appearance, Weeping Lovegrass is an excellent choice for land restoration projects, wildlife areas, and low-maintenance landscapes.
