Western Larch (Larix occidentalis) is one of the tallest and most impressive conifer species native to western North America. Unlike most evergreen trees, Western Larch is deciduous, producing soft, bright green needles in spring that turn a brilliant golden-yellow each autumn before dropping for the winter. This hardy, fast-growing tree is prized for its outstanding timber quality, beautiful seasonal color, and ability to thrive in cooler mountain climates. It makes an excellent choice for reforestation projects, wildlife habitat, windbreaks, and large landscape plantings.

Germination Instructions

Western Larch seeds require 21-30 days of cold moist stratification before planting for the best germination results.

  1. Mix the seeds with a slightly moist growing medium such as peat moss or vermiculite.
  2. Place the mixture in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 21-30 days at approximately 34-40°F (1-4°C).
  3. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining seed-starting mix and lightly cover them with soil.
  4. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  5. Place the seed tray in a warm, bright location or under grow lights. A humidity dome can help maintain consistent moisture during germination.
  6. Germination typically occurs within several weeks under proper conditions.
