The Calabrian Pine is a fast-growing evergreen conifer native to the eastern Mediterranean region. Closely related to the Aleppo Pine, this adaptable tree is valued for its drought tolerance, attractive open canopy, and ability to thrive in poor soils and hot, dry climates. Its long green needles and rugged bark make it an excellent ornamental tree for landscapes, windbreaks, erosion control projects, and reforestation efforts.

Calabrian Pine develops into a medium to large evergreen tree with a broad, irregular crown and graceful branching habit. It performs especially well in coastal areas, dry hillsides, and regions with warm summers. Once established, it is highly tolerant of heat, drought, and challenging growing conditions.

Germination Information

Calabrian Pine seeds require no pre-treatment to germinate. For best results, sow seeds on the surface of a well-drained seed-starting mix and lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil or vermiculite. Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated.

Light significantly improves germination rates:

  • 100 seeds germinated in darkness: approximately 50% germination
  • 100 seeds germinated with light exposure: approximately 72% germination

Provide bright light during germination and maintain temperatures between 65–75°F. Most seeds germinate within 14–30 days under favorable conditions.
