Germination Instructions

1. Place the seeds in a zip-lock bag filled with moist vermiculite. Refrigerate the sealed bag for approximately 8 weeks. Check the vermiculite periodically and lightly mist it with water as needed. Keep it moist, but never wet.
2. After the 8-week cold stratification period, remove the seeds and gently scarify the outer seed coat using a nail file or coarse-grit sandpaper. Rub only enough to lightly weaken the shell. Do not sand deeply into the seed.
3. Place the scarified seeds in room-temperature water and soak them overnight for approximately 12–24 hours.
4. Fill pots or seed trays with a sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix. Plant the seeds approximately 3/8 inch deep and lightly cover them with the growing medium.
5. Water gently and place the containers under a humidity dome to help maintain consistent moisture. Keep the soil moist, but never saturated.
6. Maintain a temperature between 60–68°F. Place the containers in partial shade or an area receiving low, filtered light. Avoid strong direct sunlight during germination.
7. Germination generally occurs within 2–3 weeks under suitable conditions. Some seeds may take longer, so continue maintaining consistent moisture and temperature.

Growing Information

• Transplant seedlings after they have developed several sets of true leaves and are large enough to handle safely.
• Choose a planting location with a strong trellis, fence, arbor, wall, or other climbing support.
• Space plants approximately 5–10 feet apart, depending on the desired coverage.
• Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a healthy root system.
• Established vines can tolerate short dry periods but perform best with occasional watering during prolonged drought.
• Prune during late winter or early spring to control size and remove unwanted growth.
• Virginia Creeper attaches to surfaces using adhesive-tipped tendrils and may be difficult to remove once established.
• Avoid allowing the vine to grow directly on painted siding, gutters, roof shingles, or weak structures.
• The berries are valuable to wildlife but should not be eaten by people or pets.
• Wear gloves when handling the plant if you have sensitive skin.
